The Renfrew Rifle Volunteers badge(mid Victorian) A bronze badge comprised of the intertwined letters "R,V & R"measuring about 2 inches in height and width. In trying to date it and also discover its identity I have found the Victorian Crown on it is most like the Crown shown as used by the 23rd(Eastwood & Cathcart) Coy of the 3rd Admin Bn Renfrewshire Rifle Volunteers on their pouch belt plate circa 1860. This will keep some of you busy ! Good luck Altogether a very nice item This badge also has 3 excellent copper lugs which could indicate that it may have been a headress badge. The House of MacDonald of Sleat(Isle of Skye) Clan HUISTEAN,derives its origin from Hugh, son of Alexander,Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross. Some research now needs to be done on just where Harry slotted in to all of this and indeed what became of him! and what of his piper, The banner survived but what of the chap who carried it? The Clan Chief is MacDonald of Sleat Clan Seat...Duntulm Castle Skye What a wonderful relic of that period and in superb condition. Look at pic no 3,most of the info has been derived from that letter. The Banner has been in a drawer for the past 40 years. SORRY FOLKS........GONE TO A GOOD HOME ! B R Y G STRZ. Badge to The free polish Army Just look closely at this superb badge and see the splendid incorporation of Polish military insignia and the inclusion of that magnificent thistle inscribed with the Regiments details(i. BRYG STRZ.) I await with interest details from Gary or even Claudia who will give me more information on this wonderful item. A magnificent swooping "Royal" Polish eagle between the thistle leaves. Now to the rear and we see inscribed "SCOTLAND" and underneath 1942 K&S. Scotland welcomed the "Free" poles who served their country from here and were truly great Allies and friends. During the war my family were living in Aberdour and a large Polish contingent were based there. They were very kind to us local kids and had impeccable manners. They built diving platforms on the big rocks and when the full tide came in they seemed to take their lives in their hands but we so enjoyed watching their daring feats. Post war many stayed here in Scotland and Polish clubs were very strong. I am very pleased to see our Polish friends return to Bonnie Scotland! Please got to St Andrews and see the marvellous mosaic(about 6 feet tall) of a Polish Soldier.125 Canada Overseas Regiment(For King and Country) Bronze badge Just over 1.5 inches in height and almost 2 inches in width an excellent Bz badge with "125" in the middle, surrounded by a scroll inscribed "FOR KING and COUNTRY" To the rear 2 good copper lugs.1st (City of Dundee) Volunteer Bn Black Watch(Royal Highlanders) Pipers plaid brooch Similar in everything as regular soldiers except as at this time Volunteers did not serve overseas and accordingly they were not deemed worthy of bearing Battle honours on their uniform and insignia. On the rear of the scabbard is an impressed mark"MADE IN SCOTLAND" with the maker mark"T.E." and a nice set of assaye marks. The assaye marks give me a bit of a problem,I find it difficult to say with any certainty what is the year,it is quite clear but It has me stumped! It is Edinburgh with a capital"B" looks like 1907 but more likely 1957. Whatever it is it is an excellent example.A Regimental sweetheart brooch to the R E M E This is a most exceptional piece of WW2 military sweetheart jewellery in 9ct gold and enamels. To the rear of the brooch is a superb original pin and catch with the assaye marks for Glasgow 1881 impressed on the back of the Boars head, which bears as well the "blow holes" of manufacture. The Duke of Argyll's motto "VIX EA NOSTRA VOCO" translates as "I scarcely call these things my own" and the other "NE OBLIVISCARIS" translates as " DO NOT FORGET TO BE CARING". Well do we have any idea to whom this would have belonged to? Well, I do! The date 1881 was the year of Lord Cardwell's military reforms and also the date that this brooch was assayed in Glasgow. I believe that this most wonderful item was the property of John Douglas Sutherland Campbell the 9th Duke of Argyll ! When still the Marquess of Lorne,he and Princess Louise returned from Canada in 1883 following his role of Governor general of that Country. Lord Lorne did not become the 9th Duke until the death of his father in 1900. The top of the "cap" is made from an 1899 Victorian penny with a slight raised edge made from brass. The "body" of the cap, together with the peak are in brass and likely from part of a spent bullet casing 7/8th inches in Diameter. The chinstrap is made from copper as are the studs that act as buttons along with the Crown that takes the place of the badge. Original strong pin and catch in place. Stamped /impressed at the top is"2/sea" and the number "10" just below. My opinion is that the number "10" refers to its precedence/place in the Regiments property and not to any specific amount ! This is a very eary piece and extremely tasty !A Piper's plaid Brooch to the Royal Army Service Corps A highly burnished, silvered quoit of 3.5inches Diameter with,to the centre a device similar to the beret badge of the period, viz; a voided centre with "E11"in the middle, surrounded by a strapped quoit inscribed with the motto of the Order of the Garter,"Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense"and with the top of this bearing a part laurel wreath and the bottom inscribed" Royal Army Service Corps". to the rear a strong original pin and catch with three wires securing the front deviceThis is a lovely item and reminds me of when I was attached to the 2nd(Training Bn) R.A.S.C. at Willems Bks Aldershot. in the fifties Many, many stories i could tell...but here is a little one! The figure stands upon a marble plinth(considered to be IONA marble) measuring 5.75 inches long and almost 4 inches in width and .6 ins thick. On the front of the plinth is a silver plate inscribed"JAMES SMALL OF DIRNADEAN FROM THE DUCHESS OF ATHOLE" The detail is excellent,it does look like the bayonet was fixed and is now absent. I have yet to find out the significance of the date and why it was a presentation piece from The Duchess. The figure has a long screw post which secures it to the plinth with a nut. On removing the figure the numerals "13" can be seen which may imply that quite a few Highlanders received a similar presentation. If the plinth is IONA marble that may also have some significance on why such a presentation. Iona marble is considered to have special powers and is still revered to this day. As well as general healing powers, way, way back in time it was expected to protect you against Shipwreck, fire and miscarriage! A most rare item that recently emerged from the estate of the late Colonel Sir William Jardine of Applegirth. Colonel Sir William Jardine of Applegirth Bt., TD,DL,JP. He was born in 1917 as Chief of the clan Jardine and the 11th Baronet of Nova Scotia. He was commissioned into the 5th(DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY) Battalion KOSB-A territotial battalion in June 1939 and in 1944 transferred to the 6th Bn,fighting in France, the low countries and Germany. He subsequently joined the 1st Battalion serving with them in Hong Kong and, after a short spell on the staff,in Malaya. He retired from the regular army in 1960. Colonel Sir William went on to continue his military career with the Territorial Battalions and served as a member of the Queen's bodyguard for Scotland and other civic duties. I believe that the Pipe Banner was inherited from his uncle Sir William Jardine (9th Baronet)who was born on 11th June 1865 and joined the 3rd Militia Bn KOSB as a lieutenant on the 8th May 1895. He served with the Battalion in South Africa from 1900 to 1902 by 1911 he held the rank of honorary major. When WW1 came along he enlisted in September 1915.His death is recorded as 13th December 1915. It is possible that he died of wounds sustained during the battle of Loos. He is buried in Applegirth Churchyard. This Victorian Pipe banner was in service post 1887 until 1902. The 3rd Bn Pipes & Drums was affiliated to the KOSB from 1887onwards and the staffing establishment was fixed at 1 sergeant,1 corporal and 8 pipers. The pipe banner is sown in such a matter that it is presumed that the piper could have been left handed. I am attaching a picture of the Pipe sergeant who is holding the pipes on his left side. And why not!
